What is Tetraethylene glycol monomethyl ether?

Tetraethyleneglycol monomethyl ether is a chemical compound that is used as a solvent and an inorganic acid. It is also used to produce particle board and plywood. Tetraethyleneglycol monomethyl ether has been shown to have minimal toxicity, with only mild effects on the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys.

Basic Properties of TEGME:

  • Chemical Formula: CH₃(OCH₂CH₂)₄OH

  • Appearance: Clear, colorless liquid

  • Boiling Point: ~275°C (527°F)

  • Solubility: Fully miscible with water and many organic solvents

  • Odor: Mild or almost odorless

What is Tetraethylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether Used For?

TEGME is primarily used as a solvent and chemical intermediate in various industrial and specialty chemicalapplications.

1. Solvent in Cleaners & Detergents

  • Excellent solvency for oily residues, greases, and resins

  • Used in water-based degreasers, metal cleaners, and industrial detergents

2.  Paints, Coatings, and Inks

  • Acts as a coalescent and flow promoter in waterborne paints

  • Helps in forming smooth films and reducing surface defects

  • Used in ink formulations to adjust drying time and improve performance

3.  Cosmetic and Personal Care (Limited Use)

  • Sometimes used as a carrier solvent for fragrances or active ingredients

  • Also functions as a humectant due to its hygroscopic (water-attracting) nature

4.  Chemical Intermediate

  • Used in the synthesis of surfactants, lubricants, and plasticizers

  • Acts as a building block in polymer production or specialty resins

5.  Electronics & Semiconductor Industry

  • Occasionally used in cleaning formulations for delicate electronic components due to its low volatility and low toxicity

 Safety and Handling

  • Considered to have low acute toxicity, but can cause eye and skin irritation with prolonged exposure

  • Use with protective gloves and eye protection in industrial settings

  • Always refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for detailed precautions
